EURO2016: Another song of Ice and Fire (Spain v Italy)

Image
Individuals don’t win football games, teams do. Whether it’s the controlled steady nature of an old Spanish flame or the fresh and icy Italian breeze tossing the waves; rising and falling and leaping and bounding, wild and passionate. It was that day unlike any other day for many number of days that Spain lost a knockout game to Conte’s Italia. And I hope they may always be spoken of as Conte’s Italia , for the man with the volcanic personality shouting the wind into alignment deserves to be the man who is recognized for Spain’s defeat.   Spain were autumn leaves that night when they could have been the summer. La Furia Roja was a dwindling flame to their once all-consuming power. Don’t get me wrong, they were still masters at their familiar game, outstanding on a familiar stage - their control, their precision, their stillness. They had the best line up in the EURO2016 tournament. They were still where they once were. But that’s just it. That is all they were.  ...

To Clasico or not to Clasico

Image
Hence comes the conclusion of yet another El Clasico. As the commentator said before the match, “There have been 15 clasico’s in the past 2 years, each one more important than the last.” But was what we saw today really a Clasico? To Clasico or not to Clasico, that is the question. Of course many would argue that the rightful definition of an El Clasico is any game in which FC Barcelona plays their century old rivals Real Madrid CF.    But is that all El Clasico is? As a passionate fan of Spanish football El Clasico has come to mean so much more than just a game, played by so much more than just players, between so much more than just teams, representing so much more than just clubs. El Clasico is the game which looks like the sunrise at dawn on a slightly chilly morning. It’s a game which smells like the delightful aroma of freshly baked bread.  It tastes like a crispy apple, with sweet juices coating your lips.  It feels like a w...

EURO2012: Spain won. two. three. four.

Image
To those who thought Spain couldn't make it without their top scorer and beast as top notch defender. To those who doubted Del Bosque's choice of Torres. To those who labelled Germany as the new favorites after yesterday's match. To all the football fans, in every corner of the earth, who thought, even for a second,   "What IF Spain don't win..." To me, To you. I speak for many when I say I haven't seen Spain play so well in a long time - nearly 4 days.   1. When Del Bosque had Torres in the starting line up , I admit my first thought was that it was because Cesc Fabregas had an injury scare during the week. But no one knows the boys better than Bosque. He gave Torres 70minutes and Torres gave him 2 amazing goals. It was wonderful. The best part was that the striker initiative was evident - he was brilliantly smooth in his movements without needing to over complicate anything. Two goals for all the torment and struggle. I felt that Torres was...

The Meaning of Football

Image
Football is changed. I feel it in the water. I feel it in the earth. I smell it in the air. Much that once was is lost, for none now live who remember it. But destiny was fortunate upon the Spanish; immortal, wisest and fairest of all beings. Power was given to the footballers; great and mighty warriors. And eleven, eleven positions were gifted to FC Barcelona who, above all else, desired true football.  Concerning the football club of Barcelona: Barcelona have been great footballers in the four farthings of the Catalan region for the many years of Guardiola’s reign. Earlier, they were known to be quite content to ignore and be ignored by the world of the Busy Folk – Madrid being, after all, full of strange creatures beyond count. Barcelona seemed of little importance to the heavily populated capital, previously being neither renowned as great warriors, nor counted among the very tall. In fact, it has been remarked by some that a Catalan’s only real passion is for football. A r...
